Your best introduction to Charlie Parker is a two CD box compiled by Rhino
called "Yardbird Suite: The Ultimate Charlie Parker Collection." Unlike
most other compilations out there, this one contains recordings made
throughout his career, for a number of different labels (Savoy, Dial, Guild,
Clef, Columbia) and most of the milestone recordings are here: Salt
Peanuts, Now's The Time, Ko Ko, Ornithology, Relaxin' at Camarillo, Donna
Lee, Embraceable You, Scrapple From The Apple, Parker's Mood, Star Eyes,
Confirmation, etc. Then, if you're not too fussy about sound quality, get
the live recording from the incredible Massey Hall Concert, with Dizzy
Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus and Max Roach.
