Just before Crouchfield shows up, the entire scenery down there starts to
bounce rhythmically as if it were being jostled repeatedly.  Then we're
reminded:

Then we're introduced to Crouchfield, "White Cocksman of the _terre
mauvais_."

Since I don't speak French, I looked up "mauvais" in the online dictionary
at http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary .  The following phrase popped up:

Etymology: French

I'd say it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what's going on up
there.
