Isn't it rather well established that people who undergo the trauma of rape
(or other violent trauma) -- especially children -- sometimes wall
themselves off from the experience by retreating to remote mental places.
Such an interpretation would make Slothrop even more the vehicle for an
invisible ink message to be revealed when the jism hits the Kryptosam.
It's fun to ponder the depth of research and thought that TRP must have
invested in finding out about tyrosine and weaving it into the novel. Did
he find out about tyrosine after or before he thought up the name Tyrone?
Either way, it's impressive, and absolutely mind-boggling -- especially
when you consider it is just one of a vast number of such details that he
has pieced together into this tapestry -- and, thanks, Max, for the very
useful maaswerk metaphor, and for the Fugs' "River of Shit" reference.
