The "segway" to Slothrop's trip to meet the Kenosha Kid through a
Roxbury slum just before dawn after that fateful evening (70.36 f) may
hold some clues. He certainly seems to have undergone a psychic
transformation of some description. He's wearing shoes, at least, though
no mention of socks. And, the buildings are "historied in a way that he
hasn't noticed in Beacon Street. . . . "
