A bit more elaboration on "FDR's little asshole buddies." As an example
of trying to put  the president in bed with the communists, in the 1944
election the repubs used the slogan "Clear everything with Sidney." This
was Sidney Hillman the head of the communist infiltrated (supposedly) CIO
umbrella labor organization. Hillman was very active in democratic
politics and at one point in the politcal convention FDR had been heard to
say, probably in connection with the choice of a vice-presidential
candidate  "Clear everything with Sidney."
