To Those Who Know,
And those who might not. The Sasoon family were very wealthy
Jews who arose during the 19th century and came to be known as "The
Rothschilds of the East." They were originally Persian (I think), and grew
in influence to have brokerages in (From memory) Baghdad, Bombay, Shanghai,
Yokohama, and probably more I can't remember. They were allied in many
instances with the Rothschilds, who together were called "The International
Jewish Bankers' Conspiracy." They have a long and colorful history. IMHO,
when Pynchon mentions the poet Siegfried Sassoon, not only does he put "in
play" the guy's personal history, pacifism, but also his family history for
the hundred and some years before his birth, and its role in the
anti-semitism that was central to WWII. You know the difference between
Jewish Alzheimer's disease and everybody else's? The Jews forget
everything... but the Holocaust. Joke. Dark. But Joke, nonetheless.
