Remember that Slothrop relates to the world via sermons.  What would be the
content of a sermon where one is being F'd by the Devil?  It (the rape) is a
vision of hell, like toiling in fire and being jabbed with hot pitchforks.
This sermon would be one of fire and brimstone aimed at the fate of the
Preterite.  For the Preterite, death, oblivion, would be a welcomed state.
