For perhaps the most effective report on life in those trenches, as 
well as one of the great non-fiction works of the century, I urge 
everyone who has not read Robert Graves' GOODBYE TO ALL THAT, to get 
a copy while out buying Red Dragon. Great info on Sassoon and 
Lawrence of Arabia.

btw, in the event the association is lost on anyone, it was Graves 
who wrote I, Claudius and Claudius, The God.
