GRGR(4): Grimm on Wotan

"According to pagan imagination, Wotan is not only the world-steering, wise, 
art-experienced God, - in the first place he is the steward (?) of wars and 
battles. According to the 'Edda', all noble (wo)men who are dying in the battle, 
belong to him (...). (...) Victory was in the eyes of our ancestors the first 
and highest of all gifts, but they didn't view Wotan only as the bringer of 
victory. (...) to them he was the God in general, of whose grace man had to 
expect any other honor (?), in whose hand all higher goods stand". 

[- My own poor amateur translation of: "Nach der heidnischen Vorstellung ist 
Wodan nicht bloss der weltlenkende, weise, kunsterfahrene Gott, er ist vor allem 
Ordner der Kriege und Schlachten. Nach der Edda gehoeren ihm alle im Kampf 
fallenden Edlen (...). (...) Sieg war in den Augen unserer Vorfahren erste und 
hoechste aller Gaben, doch betrachteten sie Wodan nicht nur als Siegverleiher. 
(...) er (galt) ihnen ueberhaupt fuer den Gott (...), von dessen Gnade der 
Mensch jede andere Auszeichnung zu erwarten hat, in dessen Hand alle hoeheren
