I agree with Pynchon scholars who believe that TRP knows what he's doing
when he makes specific historical and artistic allusions in his novels.
But, GR is not a crossword puzzle. People don't stand for other people.
In some passages there are allusions that are meant to recall other, real
historical, people. They are not strict correspondences. They are
allusions, meant to call associations to mind.
