With reference to which, I would mention "Doom Patrol" comic (don't have 'em 
with me so I can't check the issue numbers, but it was during the Grant 
Morrison run, issues 19-60) in which Hoffman's original bicycle, magically 
charged with psychedelic energies, becomes the mode of transport for the 
anarchic Brotherhood of Dada.
The Doom Patrol are sent to combat them but can't on the whole be bothered 
to do so.

One of the original Doom Patrol team was a female equivalent of Plastic Man, 
an iconic presence for Richard Farina (referenced several times in "Long 
Time Coming and a Long Time Gone", his collected short stuff).

Just a brief diversion from the minutiae there.
