----------
(268.30) The first night he was afraid to fall asleep, afraid of a visit
from Jamf, whose German-scientist mind would be battered by Death to only
the most brute reflexes, no way to appeal to the dumb and grinning evil of
the shell that was left... voices twittering with moonlight around his image
as step by step he, It, the Repressed, approaches.... _waitaminute_ up out
of sleep, face naked, turning to the foreign gravestones, _the what? What
was it?_... back again, almost to it, up again... up, and back, that way
most of the early night.
----------

The movement here is "up" and "back." Direction and Time. Approach is
"back." Retreat is "up." The approach to the Repressed is "down" and
back." Retreat is "up" and "forward."

"Down" in the text is usually related to the deep, as in the Sea (the depths
of the Unconscious). "Back" in time is that common theme "Reversal." These
places are Universal. Slothrop's Repressed may be that of the [not Borg]
Collective. Of course that reading should not let the reader off the hook.
No Easy-Boy reading yet.

Slothrop's repression is in the Forbidden Wing. Slothrop's dance with the
Repressed maybe seen as high sanity, even heroicism, because he actively
pursues his repressed. He approaches it in his dreams and in his conscious
life. If it controls him, it is not possession. It is a dance.

"Back" and "down" to the Worst.

David Morris
