Actually, the post-Rudy Times Square looks a lot more like a Planet
Hollywood version of Las Vegas (i.e., no bare breasted cabaret dancers, no
gambling and nothing "offensive"), which is as compelling a practical
defense of Baudrillard's writings on "simulacra" as I've seen in a long,
long time. If there's any architectural "zeitgeist" left in either Las
Vegas or Times Square, it's certainly been covered by a pretty thick
veneer of obliterating neon. Try downtown Boston for architectural
zeitgeist, for better or worse.
