The problem with type of sensational science is that people
read it. Wall Street guy sitting on the train, Wife in her
mid thirties can't get pregnant, paranoid luddites and
aspiring Frankenstiens and kids with a genuine interest in
the wonders of science. It was perhaps unfair to target one
particular article, but as he was selling his book, web
stuff, and machines and, since the article is very relevant
to recent discussions, and since Pynchon mentions the
quarterly, I thought I would take the excuse....
PS In the May, 1941 Popular Science is Liet. Col. A. m.
Prentiss, author of "How homes can be protected from Air
Attack." He was in the chemical warfare service in the world
war and in 1936 he was sent out to eight European countries
to gather information on civil air defense.
