Because it is a very clear declaration of his lack of *belief* and his
*expectations* of readers. Whenever I read such assertions I imagine Pynchon
reading it and wonder what he would think and whether such assertions indeed
match his *beliefs.* Genuine communication and understanding regarding such
matters are difficult enough in real time with face to face participants; all
the more when one of the participants speaks only by writing essays and
fiction.
