Strange how Katje (in retrospect) is described as a Thanatoid. Think how so
many are undone today by such lesser evils (but evil none the same) as
television. For all of Pynchon's satire in Vineland re: this, it stings hard
hwn one can link these guys back to a worse original, namely the underground
dodges and compromises. In some sense, the folks today are worse off. They
didn't have to make such no-win decisions. They don't have to work as hard
to have us bouncing like Profane today, do they?
Anyway, the upshot is You end up the same, wishing for death, fearing its
manifestations, and wandering, wandering. You know you are dead and playing
out the season.
