I remember reading--somewhere--that Pynchon is a fan of _Archy and 
Mehitabel_ by Don Marquis, about Archy the typing cockroach (no uppercase of 
course) and his friend the free-spirited cat Mehitabel.  This dates from, I 
believe, the 1930s?  Great fun if you haven't had the pleasure.  A simple 
web search located this site with samples from the book:

PS.  I saw the new edition of _Warlock_ at a B&N in Reno, but I don't know 
if stores outside the University of Nevada area carry it or not.
