Getting carried away?
Fascism:
a system of government characterized by rigid one-party dictatorship,
forcible suppression of opposition, private economic enterprise under
centralized governmental control, beligerent nationalism, racism,
militarism, etc.
The "Repugnants and Demipublicans" are, to paraphrase General Buck
Turgidson, "two admittedly regrettable but nevertheless
distinguishable" entities at the level of policy and oughtn't to be
considered a single party. Our own Chris K's valiant expression of
opposition in Philly is being quite handily repressed without, so far
as I can tell, the application of a whole lot of force -- media silence
works so much better. We (here in the U.S.) are hegemons, but not
especially belligent ones, for now. We are, rhetorically at least,
working on the racism which coats our society like a film of oil on
water.
Our problem is the bad old "military industrial complex" that both
Pynchon (and Eisenhower) went on about at length. Guns, money, oil =
politics. Our own "desperate fraction" continues to turn a profit, at
the expense of the future, the present, and even, through Their
capacity to compose history as They wish, of our past. Our better
intentions are turned back upon us as propaganda as easily as are our
ugliest prejudices.
Hot tip: buy stock in Raytheon. What was that insignia discussed in
GRGR a while back -- a shoulder patch for an U.S. unit that looked like
a fistful of missiles seen out of a dialating asshole?
For all intents and purposes, R.J.Reynolds got the Bomb long ago...
Getting carried away, and in my cups,
Mark
