A good brief article on the Kazakh film industry appears in this month's
Economist. It says in part:

In the eyes of many Kazakhs, it is their
culture which holds them back. They see
            America, and especially Hollywood, as
imbued with a culture of forgetting.
“Whenever you want to move forward you
have to forget,” says one director. “We
Kazakhs, by contrast, are nomadic. We
favour oral tradition. Ours is a culture of
            remembering.”
