Pynchon sighting in New York

A weekend opportunity to go to New York turned up a weekend opportunity to
go to the Gotham Book Mart on 47th street, where I came across quite
possibly the fattest orange tabby I've ever seen in my life (bookstore
cats being, of course, notorious for their sloth and spoiledness...).
When I asked the owner his name, he replied simply "Pynchon." Needless to
say, I petted him profusely and asked him all sorts of questions about his
work, but the little bugger was just plain inscrutable. Still, I was
pleased as punch to have run into Pynchon the very first place I looked in
Manhattan. He even allowed me to play with him using his favorite piece of
string.
