I seriously doubt this thesis in regards to Slothrop's supposed growing 
insignificance in the text.  Mythology is at the very center of the patterns 
here discussed.  If one wishes to divorce these patterns from their numinous 
origins, that might be done, but the price might be the loss of the very 
truth these myths embody.
