Try comparing Greta to Blicero -- two very different takes on what Nazi
culture creates. I guess they're both victims because of cultural
imprinting and because they're pawns in the hands of powers higher up in
the hierarchy. But Greta is so much more appealing -- among many other
things, Pynchon seems to me to be playing with female movie star mythology
in his depiction of this character, the complexities of a woman whose image
on screen has such power over so many men and yet who, in her personal
life, is so fucked over, sick, pathetic. The parallel is not precise, but
it brings to my mind an actress who, according to Jules Siegel, made a deep
impression on Pynchon: Marilyn Monroe.
