Eh? What about the obvious function of comic relief? GR is a heavy
novel, and though it's often funny the humor is not always the kind
of funny that relieves the tension of 179 odd pages of Pynchon, or
however many it is to the candy scene. That scene stands out, for me,
as a huge de-pressuring, or relaxing, moment.

Of course, then come the bombs immediately afterward...
