You can slice this pie ad infinitum:  most eastern and southern european 
folks had a hard time as immigrants at the turn of the 19th century.  They 
huddled together, mistrusted the police and authorities (anglo-saxon, 
german, irish for the most part) to the point where many became obsessive 
about fitting in. Odd how that neighborhoodly feel that so many today pine 
for was based on some sort of oblique discrimination and ethnic/racial 
defensiveness.  If one were of a certain mind, one could say this country 
was founded upon such ideals.
