Noting that I am no expert: As near as I can tell, a string quartet (first
violin, second violin, viola and cello) is divided into "Inner Voices" -- second
violin and viola -- and "Outer Voices", first violin and cello. Maybe this is a
Haydn-specific thing? I dunno. ppp-to-fff blasts are huge sudden increases in
volume; the One going the other way would be an equally big sudden falling-off
in volume, a shout suddenly modulating to a sub-whisper.
