I followed Terrance's advice and am reading Norman O. Brown's _Life 
Against Death_. A Pynchon reader could do worse than to read the 
chapter on Swift, "The Excremental Vision," not only to illuminate 
some of the themes Pynchon plays with here in GR, but also that tale 
of a tub he chose to include in M&D (which s~Z called our attention 
to during the MDMD, if I remember correctly).  Thanks for the tip,
