Personally, the word "equate" kinda rubs me the wrong way, but I don't see it 
as a categorical mistake to proceed like that.  And for me it's not so much 
that you see the author through the screen of his prose, more like the prose 
is part of the author.  It's like saying that if somebody winks at you, the 
wink doesn't show you their personality so much as help constitute their 
personality.

An author behind a screen of prose sounds platonist.
