the following is m.o.p.a.t. from the glossary in jung/jaffé: erinnerungen,
 träume, gedanken. page 413:

"mandala means circle, especially magic circle. the mandalas are not only
wide-spread over the whole east, but are also among us plentifully testified
from the middle ages. christian especially, they can be supported by
documentary evidence for the early middle ages, mostly with christ in the
middle with the four evangelists or their symbols in the cardinal points. this
conception must be very old, since also horus with his four sons was portrayed
 by the egyptians like that."

(kommentar zu: das geheimnis der goldenen blüte,1929, 10. aufl. 1973, erscheint
in ges. werke xiii, studien über alchemistische vorstellungen.)

"according to experience, mandalas do emerge ... in situations, which are
characterized by confusion and perplexity. the archetype that is constellated
by that represents a scheme of order, which as psychological reticule,
respectively as four-parted circle, is, so to speak, put over the psychic
chaos, whereby every content gets into its place and the whole, flowing apart
into the uncertain, is kept together through the tending and sheltering
 circle."

(ein moderner mythus. von dingen, die am himmel gesehen werden, 1958, in ges.
werke x, 1974, zivilisation im übergang, pag. 461.)
