so sez harald bloom. i decided to give it another chance in fall. years ago i
read it two times (- first in translation, than in original) & except for that
highway scene where oedipa feels like a heroin particle in the bloodstream
of la (- or did i dream that?) it did not reach me at all the way pynchon's
other novels do. but since my life has changed completely, it might be a
completely different book to read now. my personal trp hitlist right now? gr
is the best! and the second best is m&d (- these days i'm finishing my second
read). about these ratings there is no doubt on my side. but then it gets
difficult ... this weekend i am, with my wife & children, invited to a
wedding. both of the lucky ones are literature scientists. & since i am, as
you will have already realized, an incurable proselytizer, there's no question
what to give as a present. kirsten (- she's also reading m&d these days and
feeels quite reminded on jean paul)& i think that 3 books make a good wedding
present. gr and m&d are out of question. but what's number three?! leaving out
col49 for the moment (- & also, for obvious reasons, "slow learner"), the
question is: v or vineland? well, though v might be the better text in terms
of pure aesthetics, we decided to take vineland. lots of wisdom & warmth in
it. also the easiest introduction into the pynchon-universe. so the sect of
pynchonites will probably go on growing in northern germany ...

kfl //:: ps: i hope the dj will have some becker & fagen with him ...
