Jobs lure students to U.S.
VALLEJO -- Mixed in with the constant screeching of the roller coaster
rides, a few new sounds will be heard at Vallejo's Six Flags Marine World
this summer. Someone with a French accent might be handing over ice cream
cones. A Polish girl will be offering fries with that burger. And someone
with an Irish brogue might be strapping thrill-seekers into the Medusa or
Monsoon Falls. Filling low-paying summer jobs traditionally held by
teen-agers and college students has become so challenging in the current
economy that Six Flags this year turned for the first time to foreign
students for summer help. [...] Over the next month, Six Flags-Marine
World will bring in 380 young people from Ireland, France, Poland, England
and Korea, all so eager to spend time in the United States that they don't
mind the $5.75 to $6.15 an hour wages or the idea of being bused to work
from temporary lodging as far away as Hayward. "For a lot of these kids,
this is Disneyland," said Dave Marzano, who heads Global Staffing Services,
the company that brings the youths to the United States. "This is Nirvana."
[...]

(Note: Not a bad summer gig for a teenager. And they'll probably just jump
ship and get dot.com jobs when they get here anyway. Vallejo is just a few
minutes up the freeway from here, in the North Bay part of the Internet
business hub, the greater San Francisco Bay Area.)
