"What does an Immelmann Turn look like?"
The maneuver always began with a dive (pilots needed this momentum build-up
to carry their mounts though the next step). A sharp pull on the joystick
kicked the airplane into a steep, arcing climb--a climb combined with a
roll. The roll ensured that pilot and plane came out right-side-up at the
top of a loop.
Now the pilot had a choice: He could either, A) break off the fight, enjoy
his height advantage and continue to fly straight and level--reversing the
direction of the earlier dive or, B) dive and follow the loop through while
rolling--ensuring that all concerned came out right-side-up at the bottom of
the loop.
