>First words of the new book: "Bette Davis and Margaret Dumont are in the
>curly-Cuvillies drawing-room of somebody's palatial home." (What, pray
>tell, does "curly-Cuvillies" mean?) This is Slothrop's dream.

Cuvilliès, François de
1695-1768, French architect, decorator, and engraver. He introduced French
ROCOCO decoration into Germany. His Residenz-Theater (1751-53) and
Amalienburg pavilion, in the park of Nymphenburg, both at Munich, represent
the apex of German rococo decoration.

>Bette Davis and Margaret Dumont -- they are nice symbols, I think, for
>Elect and Preterite.

I gotta agree w/ Paul, here. B.D. & M.D. represent the PROPER. That awful
buzzing sound (is it a kazoo?) is the intrusion of the IMPROPER into their
world, and Slothrop's dream.
