Pigs are also the preterite (led to slaughter).
And they are also the comic (Porky-the-Pig belly tattoos).
And, combining the two above, they are a Counterforce Hero
(Slothrop-in-a-Pig-Suit).
It has been said by some who claim to know that Mr. P. (that's Pynchon, not
Pig) is very fond of Pigs and has a collection of them, stuffed, ceramic, or
such.
BTW, for me, Doug's reference to this cthonic-pig/female symbolism
mentioned in Leonard Shlain's book makes perfect sense. There is a myth
mentioned in Campbell's _Hero w/a 1000 Faces_ in which a clam (also a
mud-dweller, and also forbidden by those same religions) functions as a
fertility goddess, actually becoming a womb, but I don't have the specifics
w/ me here.
