One more interesting thing mentioned in _To Win the War_ about German
military discipline which is hard for an American to believe (we're such
softies) and I think I heard them say this, is that between 12,000 and
14,000 German soldiers were executed for desertions and derelection of
duty type things. The greatest German weakness was in logistics. Once they
got beyond a certain point in the East there was no way to supply
themselves and defeat was a foregone conclusion. Americans are good at
logistical planning because they are used to operating far from home which
the Allies certainly had to do in Europe and even more so in the Pacific.
