I probably should emphasize that the book that started this discussion was
not about the morality of WWII or motivations of the war or the politics
of the war. The two authors are military historians. They were
principally concerned with the competence and success and failure of how
war was conducted by the various parties involved. Political factors were
discussed when they had a bearing on why certain generals were chosen for,
say, Ike's lieutenants or comparable situations in the Pacific or in
Russian American and British relations.
