Yes.  Unfortunately, both Japan and Germany grossly overestimated the amount
of time it would take us to mobilize that industrial potential

And you're also right that we were lucky; our location made our mainland
immune from serious attack by our enemies.  It followed that virtually all
the other allies suffered far greater casualties relative to their
population than we did.  Incredibly, in absolute terms over twice as many
Americans were killed in the American Civil War than in WWII - and our
population was back then about one-sixth what it was during WWII!
