I see what you're saying, although it sort of proves my point that violence
breeds violence if indeed retaliation was one of the motivating factors.
And, if it is justified on that count, we have to then assume that the
Hammurabian code has never really gone away after all, over and above
whatever legislative systems and imperial constitutions have been put in
place since ...

Neither act is defensible, imo.
