Mont Saint Michel.  Yes, a number of years ago.  It's pretty wonderful.  
Visited the cathedral at Chartres not long thereafter, found it all it's 
cracked up to be, very, very beautiful, the blue glass justly famous.

Mont Saint Michel still stands, but is a ruin.  

A French resterateur once passionately compared for me the fight between 
Brittainy and Normandy over possession of Mont Saint Michel to New York and 
New Jersey's fighting over the Statue of Liberty.  I've rarely been so bored.
