In the 1920's an Italian communist, Antonio Gramsci, developed a theory on the
function of intellectuals. He argued that their main function is: to maintain
what he called 'hegemony'. He does not generalize, i.e. he thinks that 'in the
last instance' a lot of intellectuals will choose to stand on the side of those
who're in control. And that influences their scientific work. It is much more
subtle than that but sounds pretty much like 'the invisible hand' mentioned in
an earlier post.
On revisionism. Historians have to take that seriously. Only by proving that
revisionists are wrong (i.e. what they're telling is not historical) -and it is
very hard, I must admit- and not by complaining, they will be neutralized.
Btw: over here in Belgium the spreading of revisionist ideas is a felony. Free
speech apparently is not absolute. And we have a lot of problems with fascists
over here.
Shoot me.
Michel.
