What's more, if you do need to find a glib three-word description,
"reclusive postmodern writer" gives a much more sympathetic, and accurate,
description of his achievement than "contemporary American novelist". The
"reclusive" part foregrounds, among other things, his blatant refusal to
participate in the public life of the nation and his earnest desire that the
texts speak to each reader for themselves, while the last bit begins to
shake off some of the nooses that that latter label seeks to lasso him with.
