Terrance writes (a largish snip):

> Both St. Augustine and Heidegger are dialecticians, but
> Pynchon is only a dialectician proper, his arguments,
> contests, singing battles, musical debates, do not resolve
> but flip or flop by luck or chance or some karmic
> reward/punishment perhaps.

And it's this, this lack or impossibility or simply unavailability of
resolution in Pynchon's work and for Pynchon the writer that I believe feeds
the melancholia of his most recent novel, Mason & Dixon. To deny validity
to the logic of binary oppositions, tout court, all across the board, may
also be a way of perpetuating that denial of death (adolescent or not)
Pynchon mentions in the preface to Slow Learner. Another way of being
haunted by it.
