Fits Poirier's thesis, which is itself way too schematic. Think of it: have
romance, fantasy and science fiction ever been (not exclusively but even)
predominantly American genres? Or are not at least two of them forever
tugging at Dickens's prose, to say nothing of all sorts of 18th and 19 and
20th century European gothic, or the grat Russians (but not Tolstoy, fine),
of so much of German fiction of the last 200 years (and earlier than that),
or Kafka, or.....
See what I mean?
