<Concerning the concept of 'World War'. The First One over here (Belgium) is
still called in popular speech 'Den Grooten Oorlog', the Great War. Perhaps
interesting to know that the end of WW1 (November 11th) is a holiday and the
end of WW2 is not. I have (very old) people heard referring to WW2 as 'den
anderen oorlog' (the other war) or 'den tweeden oorlog' (the second war). A
museum on WW1 at Ypres has become recently one of the most popular in
Belgium.>
When I was a kid (born 1944), all the adults around me (in Northern
California) referred to it simply as "The War." The first time I heard of
World War Two, I made the comment: "When I grow up I will fight in World War
Nine." This brought a rueful chuckle (I was a cute little guy in those days).
