Nazi ideology

An observation in a new book _A War to be Won_ by Williamson Murray and
Allan Millett runs somewhat contrary to conventional wisdom about
the importance of Nazi ideology in German battle performance in WWII.
According to these two scholars, racial and communist fears meticulously
instilled into the officers and men was an exceedingly important factor in
whatever success the Germans did achieve in the face of much material
disadvantage. Apparently German military leaders paid attention to Hitler
a good deal more than they later much wanted to admit.
