Thurn & Taxis Beer

The brewery of Thurn & Taxis in Franconia produces the only rye beer in
Germany. Although, to my American tastes, one of the best beers on the
continent, it has found only a niche market in Germany and is a bit
difficult to find, even in the home region. The story goes that centuries
ago, rye had been the favored grain for brewing, but a series of poor rye
harvests led to an order to reserve rye for bread, thus beer had to be made
from lesser grains, to which the population grew familar.
