An Enigmatic Writer Depicts Secret Worlds
J.T. LeRoy chronicles hustler's life

As is usually the case with enigmatic personalities, stories abound:
Some insist that J.T. Leroy is a nom de plume for writer Dennis
Cooper, whose latest book, "Period,'' has that same LeRoy photograph
on its cover. Others say LeRoy is real but suggest that he's in fact
a girl masquerading as a boy masquerading as a girl.
Adding to the mystery is the fact that he won't conduct face-to-face
interviews or do public readings. His lifeline to the outer world is
his personal Web site at www.jtleroy.com, where he compiles his
writings, answers e-mail and peddles raccoon penis bones, which play
a central, talismanic role in "Sarah.''
