  no, gr is gr. i don't doubt that the menippean satire is a relevant form here 
 (- actually i learned interesting things about it from you and from charles 
  hollander), maybe even the most relevant of the traditional prose forms. but 
  there are also other ones. i'm thinking of the bildungsroman, whose form can 
  be observed at tyrone's éducation sentimentale. (this form is also relevant 
  for other pynchon novels: to benny profane v is a negative bildungsroman, 
  vineland to prairie a positive one). perhaps the "spy novel", about which i 
  know too little, is also pertinent. in general i think that we can follow max 
  weber here, who, as you might know, methodologically suggested the use of 
  "idealtypen" (- about "ideal types"). this means that certain theoretical 
  notions, like "mennipean satire" or "charismatic domination", can never be 
  found as such in the empirical reality. they are instruments which have to put 
  in their plurality as a   c o n s t e l l a t i o n  around the single case. 
  if the set of lights is carefully installed, we may will see one or two things 
  which weren't apparent before ...
