 I think the journey to knowledge, maturation of
the  protagonist, is part of the Menippen satire, 
parodic, as in Oedipa Maas. In GR, Slothrop is both bait and
baited, the protagonist's obsession with V. or Tristero is
now a universal obsession with Slothrop and V-2. Slothrop's
picaresque
adventures and romantic obsession with the Rocket can be
seen as combining Benny (the picaro) and Stencil (the
quester).

But I agree with what you say here Kai, I agreed with Kieth
(I think) when he noted bildungsroman, in the archives,
don't ask where, search function still not working, I are
some posts on this.
