Slothrop is strongly affected by both these women, who are both really the same
woman. Greta's effect on Slothrop is emotional numbness, "distance." Bianca's
effect on him is the opposite. On the surface the contrast between them is
obvious: an aging need-ridden whore Vs. a nymphette who promises escape.
Later, when Slothrop is snoozing on Frau Gnahb's ship [side: GRGR(22)Summary3
to arrive soon], Bianca snuggles up to Slothrop while he sleeps and says,
"You're really in that Europe, now," as if her ghost had lured Slothrop over
the edge of the Annubis. Leading Slothrop into Europe by bringing him onto the
Annubis was also Greta's doing. It seems these two are a tag-team.
How Slothrop's plunge overboard and next leg on the black-market ship makes him
"really in that Europe, now" is unclear to me...
