Hmm, I wonder if that's Sonya Kovaleskaya. She was a student of
Weierstrass, and her great contribution was the solution of the dynamics
of the top using hyperelliptic functions. Never worked through the
solution, but it sure looks awesome. There *may* be a presentation of it
in Whittaker and Watson, but I am not sure. A biography of her exists.
She used to make claims for her gypsy blood, probably exoticic romanticism
on her part, given the obvious glances down the nose and sticks up your
ass that would have elicited from landed gentry in Russia ... There may be
a mention of her among lists of well-known Romani people in history based
on such claims.
So many "may"s in one paragraph -- she will stay, hey?
